The Man
came to life when Bill Straus suggested to New Line Entertainment that they find a vehicle to hone in on the comedic talents of
Eugene Levy
. The search led them to Jim Piddock and Margaret Oberman's script. A story about an affable dental salesman and a hard-edged federal agent who are forced to work together and who eventually grow to tolerate each other. With Levy committed, Director Les Mayfield a veteran on action comedies such as Blue Streak got the call. After showing interest in working with Levy and reading the script they had found the perfect complimentary actor,
Samuel Jackson
. to play Vann, an off-the-chart, edgy undercover cop.
When casting supporting roles they were looking for actors to bring a certain flavor to the parts. For the roles of Vann's tough talking boss, Lt. Rita Carbone:
Susie Essman
fit the criteria.
Anthony Mackie's
role as Booty, Vanns street hustling snitch, also fell into the "flavor" category. With others such as
Luke Goss
, bringing the edgy gunrunner Joey to life and
Miguel Ferrer
as Agent Peters, who is determined to prove Vann's involvement. Rounding out the cast is
Rachael Crawford
as Dara, Vann's ex-wife and
Horatio Sanz
a gullible desk cop.
The film is shot in a dramatic way - unlike a more traditional comedy. The Man employs dcsaturated colors for the set design in order to draw the audience's focus into the relationship between Vann and Andy, getting their full attention.
The Man is a
dramatic comedy
in both story and character as these two seemingly opposite men find them selves in a collision of two worlds.
